Modified hospital bed

Problem: A young girl with Rett's Syndrome had a hospital bed with rails that were unstable and too short to prevent her from falling out.  Her mother had to secure her into bed by blocking off the edges with furniture.  The bed was also too high for transfers.

Solution:  The bed was modified to be height adjustable.  Solid rails were installed to ensure her safety.  Gaps between the headboard and footboard were also filled as extra safety precautions.

Volunteers:  Engineering work term students, Robert Cove and Chris Conway.  Memorial University's Technical Services, Dr. Leonard Lye, Joanne Porter, and Martin Ordonez.

Donors: Russel Metals, Interex Systems Ltd.
